Decomposition is an inevitable process that begins after death, characterized by the breakdown of a living organism’s tissues into simpler organic and inorganic compounds. This natural process, also referred to as putrefaction, is driven by microorganisms such as bacteria, which play a vital role in decomposing organic material. As decomposition progresses, it releases gases such as methane and hydrogen sulfide, which contribute to the well-known physical changes and odors associated with decaying bodies.

Two primary forces drive the decomposition process: autolysis and saprophytic microorganisms. Autolysis begins when the body’s cells start to break down, aided by enzymes that digest internal organs and tissues. This process alone can lead to substantial deterioration of a corpse, but the involvement of saprophytic microorganisms accelerates it. These bacteria thrive on dead or decaying organic matter, breaking it down into nutrients that recycle back into the environment.
