About University
National Forensic Sciences University, the erstwhile Gujarat Forensic Sciences University, is the brainchild of the Government of Gujarat. It was established by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri. Narendra Modiji, then Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2009, with a sole objective of creating professional experts in the field of Forensic sciences. At a juncture marked by a spiking number of crimes involving sophisticated technologies and highly evolved modus operandi, there was a need for scientists and technocrats. Thereby, the resolution of such heinous crimes was more diligently possible. The Government of Gujarat has prudently considered this, and the university came into existence as a unique, first-of-its-kind academic institution dedicated to Forensic Sciences worldwide.
Since its inception, the university has been scaling new heights with its extraordinary and exemplary performances in the field of academic forensic sciences. Though the university started with conventional courses in forensic sciences, it has introduced novel courses aligned with the country’s requirements to address societal issues. Starting with four courses across three institutes, the university shrugged off the early stages with pioneering efforts to introduce distinctive courses, such as forensic nursing, forensic odontology, homeland security and anti-terrorism, and digital forensics, to mention a few. This has reached a magical figure of forty currently. Prospective and aspiring experts have highly sought after all these courses, as they are in high demand. Based on its impressive successes achieved by this university within a short span of eleven years, the Government of India has recognized its services to the student communities and the professionals of national and international origin. It was accorded the status of an Institution of National Importance and a central university in October 2020.
The university has been reaching numerous milestones every year with stellar academic and other related activities. Within a couple of years of its inception, the university has obtained UGC recognition and NAAC accreditationAccreditation – a process by which a laboratory must prove to an accrediting agency that their processes, equipment, and employees are competent, credible, and accurate. The accrediting agency will inspect the laboratory and observe its Read Full Definition in its sixth year. The university has been making concerted efforts in cutting-edge research, and this is reflected in the publication of such innovative outcomes in internationally reputable journals. Such innovations are related to criminal investigations and physical and digital security. This university has become more popular as a resourceful, unique, contemporary, and relevant destination for enhancing the professional expertise of officers involved in criminal investigations through training provided by globally renowned experts. This is being taken care of, in addition to the training imparted to the country’s officers in relevant departments such as law enforcement, judiciary, finance and insurance sectors, wildlife department, income tax department, internal security, armed forces, etc.
The university has developed another institution exclusively for the training of such professionals. It has also integrated the management studies in its ambit. A large number of officers from various countries across the African continent, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and West Asia, to mention a few. The university has been very successful in its venture into consultancy services, thanks to its precision, promptness, and punctuality. This is possible due to diligent efforts. The university has also established various centres of excellence in its campus, such as the Ballistics Research Centre and Testing Range, Cyber Defence Centre, International Centre for Forensic Narcotics, and International Centre for Humanitarian Forensics. The ICFN was established with the support of the Ministry of Home Affairs. The ICHF was established in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross, a globally acclaimed humanitarian organization. These centres provide academic, research, training, and consultancy services to national and international clients and students.
Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India, has already annexed the Delhi Centre, the erstwhile National Institute of Criminology and Forensic Sciences, to this university. There is scope for integrating many centres across the country and the globe with this university for the benefit of the country’s scientific investigative experts. There are many prospects for this university to establish a number of academic centres across the globe in the near future. This would definitely lead to the globalization of forensic sciences academia in a true sense by this service-oriented institution. This proves the contemplation of the global village of forensic sciences under one roof of NFSU.
