Forensic science applies a broad spectrum of scientific principles, techniques, and methodologies to criminal and civil laws, primarily when investigating crimes and other legal matters. It involves collecting, examining, analyzing, interpreting, and reporting physical evidence with the ultimate goal of providing objective findings that can assist in legal proceedings. It is often also referred to as criminalistics.

  • Forensic Pathology: Conducts autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death (e.g., homicide, suicide, accident, natural, undetermined).

  • Forensic Toxicology: Analyzes bodily fluids and tissues for the presence or absence of drugs, alcohol, poisons, and other toxic substances.
  • DNA Analysis (Forensic Biology): Examines biological evidence (blood, semen, saliva, hair, skin) to develop DNA profiles for identification, comparison, and establishing familial relationships.

  • Questioned Documents Examination: Analyzes handwriting, signatures, typewriting, inks, and papers to determine authenticity, authorship, or detect alterations.
  • Digital Forensics (Cyber Forensics): Recovers and investigates material found in digital devices related to computer crime, including computers, mobile phones, and storage media.
