  2. In 1996, the Odwalla company faced a devastating crisis when 66 people became ill after drinking their apple juice, and one child tragically died. As a result of this tragedy, Odwalla was fined $1.5 million, one of the highest fines ever imposed in a food poisoning case.

Their analysis determined that the contamination was due to unsanitary conditions in the plant, including a leaky roof and unclean equipment.
  4. In 2011, a German outbreak of E. coli was linked to fenugreek seeds imported from Egypt. Food forensics experts were called in to help trace the origin of the contamination. They identified the specific shipment of fenugreek seeds that was responsible for the outbreak and discovered that the seeds had been contaminated with E. coli at some point during their journey from Egypt to Germany.
  5. In 2017, a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections was linked to papayas imported from Mexico. Food forensics experts were called in to help identify the source of the contamination. They traced the contamination back to a specific farm in Mexico and recommended changes in growing and harvesting practices to prevent future outbreaks.
  6. In 2013 a hepatitis A outbreak was traced back to a frozen berry blend. Food forensics experts were called in to help identify the specific berries responsible for the contamination. They identified frozen pomegranate seeds as the source of hepatitis A, and traced them back to a particular shipment from Turkey.
