A New Jersey lawyer, Matthew Nilo, who was recently charged with sexually assaulting four women in Boston based on DNA evidence left on a drinking glass, now faces accusations of five additional attacks during the same period. Nilo, 35, from Weehawken, New Jersey, pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including aggravated rape, kidnapping, assault with intent to rape, and indecent assault and battery. The charges relate to four attacks that occurred in Boston’s Charlestown neighborhood between August 2007 and December 2008, a time when Nilo was reportedly residing in the city.
Expanding the Scope of Accusations: Suffolk County District Attorney’s Statement
In a recent development, Matthew Nilo has been indicted on seven charges for five attacks on four women in Boston’s North End, as announced by Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden. The attacks took place between January 2007 and July 2008 when the victims were walking alone in the dark, either at night or early in the morning. Notably, one of the victims was targeted twice within an 11-day span, according to a news release from Hayden.
Hayden emphasized the significance of this case, stating, “This case demonstrates that no attack will go uninvestigated, no suspect will go unpursued, and no amount of time will insulate a criminal from a crime.”
DNA Evidence Links Nilo to Previous and New Attacks
Authorities have revealed that Matthew Nilo’s connection to the initial assaults was established through DNA analysis of a drinking glass he used during a corporate function earlier this year. The legality of obtaining DNA without a warrant has been questioned by Nilo’s defense attorney, Cataldo.
With the newly filed indictments, Nilo now faces one count of rape, one count of aggravated rape, three counts of assault with intent to rape, and two counts of indecent assault and battery.
Upcoming Court Appearance and Bail Status
Following his release on bail earlier this month, Matthew Nilo is scheduled to appear in court on July 13 to address the new charges brought against him.
