In a major development for research labs worldwide, Promega Corporation has launched the ProDye Terminator Sequencing System—a new Sanger sequencing chemistry that can be used on any capillary electrophoresis (CE) platform. This breakthrough system is compatible with various instruments, including Promega’s own benchtop Spectrum Compact CE System, as well as SeqStudio and Applied Biosystems Genetic Analyzers.

More than 40 years after its invention, Sanger sequencing remains the gold standard for DNA sequencing. It is especially valuable for applications such as mitochondrial sequencing, de novo sequencing, and confirming results from next-generation sequencing (NGS). Despite the growing adoption of NGS due to its decreasing cost, Sanger sequencing continues to be the most cost-efficient method for sequencing shorter DNA fragments.

“Because the workflows for sequencing already exist, we designed this kit to integrate seamlessly into current protocols,” said Jay Lemke, Senior Research Scientist at Promega Corporation.

The ProDye Terminator Sequencing System employs a proprietary thermostable DNA polymerase and incorporates the same dyes found in Thermo Fisher Scientific’s BigDye Terminator V3.1 Cycle Sequencing Kit. This innovation offers research labs increased flexibility and efficiency by ensuring that the Promega chemistry can be implemented on virtually any CE instrument available.

With this launch, Promega reinforces its commitment to supporting forensic and research communities by providing tools that enhance the accuracy and cost-effectiveness of DNA sequencing.
